The
neighbour of South Africa and one-time colony in the past, also
a former German colony, Namibia is a big sparsely populated country.
Except for the Caprivi band, which goes towards the middle of
the continent between Botswana, Zimbabwé and Angola, the
rest of the country is made up of deserts.
You mustn’t conclude that the scenery is therefore monotonous
– far from that! Each region has a different kind of desert
and a wealth not just based on minerals.

The enormous sand dunes of the Namib Desert do not at all resemble
the arid canyon of the Fish River, and the Kalahari Desert is
different from the Damaraland or the National Etosha Park. These
deserts are, among other things, natural reserves, wherein animals
feel at ease because of the sparse human population density and
very little illegal poaching.
Namibia is a country that is well organised for tourists. The
hotels are comfortable, the people very welcoming and the road
network is in very good condition.

Many
roads are not paved, but you can drive on them quite comfortably without
a 4-wheel drive. You simply drive more slowly than usual, and take this
into consideration in your schedule. Visiting all the regions of Namibia
would require 3 to 4 weeks minimum. However, in ten days you can visit
the two main regions that we recommend for a first trip: the Namib Desert
and the Etosha Park.
